KANDINSKY IN GOVAN: ART, SPIRITUALITY AND THE FUTURE

In October 1911 the Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky completed in German the manuscript of a little book that he called "Über das Geistige in der Kunst" – usually translated as Concerning the Spiritual in Art. This webpage (link below) sets the context of a small but international centenary celebration conference, Kandinsky in Govan. It will be hosted by community groups in an area of Glasgow that suffers from high unemployment and many social problems, but which retains a powerful community spirit and much artistic talent. Like Kandinsky's book the conference seeks not to promote "art for art's sake", but like the Russian Peredvizhniki school of "wanderers" or "itinerants", to explore "art as service". With keynote speakers including leading art experts and the Chief Medical Officer for Scotland, we will be exploring how art can speak in places of poverty today. The conference will challenge the narcissistic nihilism of contemporary art forms that have turned their backs on beauty and, perhaps arguably, lost sight of art's deepest function.

United Service Latest

Hello everyone... Looking forward to Sunday 28th August and the joint service...
Thanks to Heather and Malcolm for getting Lansdowne Church as clean as humanly possible...
... to Laura and all who will be helping with young church activities. There will be a 'scratch choir' rehearsal from 10 a.m. led by Donald McIntosh. The hymns chosen by people in the churches are:

Hymn 120 God, we praise you. God we bless you.
Hymn 532 Lord, you have come to the seashore
Hymn 777 Kyrie Eleison, Christe Eleison, Kyrie Eleison
Hymn 489 Come down O love divine
Hymn 167 Guide me, O thou great Jehovah
Hymn 639 I bind myself today
Hymn 500 Lord of creation, to you be all praise!
Hymn 192 All my hope on G-d is founded (All CH4)
Lest you think that I have gone a bit hymn crazy, I took the executive decision to include all thee hymns submitted. Some will replace Anthems, Offertory music etc. It seemed kindest to include rather than exclude...

There will be provision for children and young people. Hymns will be chosen from a list compiled from favourites in each church and we plan to involve musical support from across the grouping. Don't be backward in coming forward!

So far we have 'Come Down O Love Divine' chosen by Hyndland.
And from Kelvinside Hillhead a choice of any of the three hymns which are set to Lux tremenda:  120 "God, we praise you", 353 "Bright the cloud and bright the glory" or 617, "Great and deep the Spirit's purpose" .... plus 204, "I am the church"

Many thanks for the great start!

The 'Meet Malawi' event last Friday (see previous post) was a great evening and very sucessful launch of the fund raising campaign for HIV/AIDS projects in Malawi, in partnership with Christian Aid. It was also an example of what we can achieve working together as a group of churches and of how enjoyable that can be.

So a big thank-you to all who made it such a good night.

All who came (more than we had expected!)
The fruit choppers, the juice squeezers, the balloon blowers, the hall-setters-uppers.
Tea and coffee servers.
The home team from Kelvinside Hillhead.
All who baked for the best laden home baking stall that's been seen for a long time.
All who sold baked goodies all night.
Those on the fairtrade stall from the Balmore Coach House Trust.
The Co-Op Great Western Rd. for donated snacks
The One World Shop for supplies of Malawian Cola and Fairtrade juice
The music makers:Nat Chalamanda and David Black who formed an instant new music duo to play music from Malawi.
The speakers: Wendy Young from Christian Aid and Sandra Whyte MSP
Roddy Watt with slides and informative commentary.
The clearer-uppers and dish-washers, and all who worked hard in any way to make the evening so enjoyable.
Money is still coming in - the total will hopefully be around £900, which of course will eventually be multiplied up to £9,000.

There will be more events and fund-raising activities for this project to raise our target of £5,000 by December 2012. Watch this space!

Appreciation

Christ is risen. Christ is risen indeed! Thanks are due to all the leaders of worship, preparers of worship materials, setters-up of worship spaces, openers and closers of churches .... for a memorable and though-provoking Holy Week. From the anointing of Jesus by Mary, reflections on Christ, the grain that dies and bears fruit, via the questions posed by Judas, the servant Lord at Last Supper, to the cross and passion...  much to ponder, much to be grateful for. Thanks everyone...
